Once upon a time

January 24, 2000 at 8:47 am (Life)

My lifetime interest and pride in the military of the United States is rooted in my own service. At the time, military service was mandatory through a draft. I was not smart enough or rich enough so I served two years in the Army.

My basic training and clerk school was at Fort Jackson, SC, beginning in 1960 after high school graduation. I then spent the balance of my two years at Fort Clayton, Panama Canal Zone, as a clerk in an Army stockade (jail).

Fortunately, I avoided the Cuban missile crisis which extended duty to over two years for many, and the Vietnam fiasco; both started right after my discharge in late 1962. Nonetheless, all the veterans who served honorably have my deepest respect as do all on active duty today.
